Activity 35/2011 - Dec 18 - Round The Island Relay

The traditional closing road running event of Penang, the Round The Island Relay 2011, organised by PAAA, took off at 5:30am as usual on the 3rd Sunday of December, the 18th. This is the 34th annual edition , probably one of the oldest road races in the country.

The START/FINISH point was scheduled to be held at the Esplanade, unlike last year which was at the Upper Penang Road, but due to a last minute clash with a cycling event at the same venue which was given a preference in priority, it was shifted to Jalan Green Hall, the same venue of this event held two years ago.
Obviously the Esplanade is an ideal holding place and ironically this popular place is always booked on weekend by an December Pesta event, would not be surprised a repeat in next year's scenario.

Same format applied this time with each team consisting of 12 runners and 3 reserves to round-up 72.7km of the island in a clockwise direction in official closing times of 6 hours for the Men Open and 7 hours for the Men Veteran and Mixed categories.

The route was as follows :
[1] J. Green Hall -> 7.5km -> [2] Gelugor -> 7.3km -> [3] Bayan Lepas -> 6.3km -> [4] Sg. Batu -> 3.9km -> [5] Balik Pulau -> 5.0km -> [6] Genting -> 6.4km -> [7] Sg. Rusa -> 5.7km -> [8] Sg. Pinang -> 7.5km -> [9] Teluk Bahang -> 5.3km -> [10] Batu Ferringhi -> 6.3km -> [11] Tanjung Bungah -> 6.4km -> [12] Tanjung Tokong -> 5.1km -> J. Green Hall = total 72.7km
