Activity 2/2011 - Feb 12 - 2nd USM Open Relay 2011

The 2nd USM Open Relay 2011 held yesterday at the Penang USM Athletics Stadium was the first event in our local running calender for the year 2011. Like the previous year when it was inaugurated we entered 4 teams just for 'fun' as we are basically long distance road runners and this year, for the same spirit we participated as well.

Manager Andrew Loh n Captain Jin initiated the move and Cupido Kelvin Tharm was appointed as the Team Manager of this event. After a number of time trial selections at the USM Athletics stadium we decided to register 5 teams in the Open category viz:
Men
4x200m : 2 teams (Cheng Siew Czing, Cheng Siew Seng, Danny Poh Yee Chuan)
.................(Vincent Teoh Soon Lee, Calvin Lim Wen Quan, Koo Chia Lee, Phang Jit Hun)
4x800m : (Ooi Seow Fung, Wong Jin Ji, James Lee Yeow San, Tim Stelzer)
Medley (200m>200m>400m>800m) -
1 team (Lee Chun How, Eric Lim Tzu Yiang, James Lee Yeow San, Ooi Seow Fung)
Women
4x200m - (Chung Mei Ling, Denise Peh Bee Leng, Sarah Foong Yuen Jing, Lee Mei Lan)

The meet was held from the morning till at night with the 1st event shot-off at about 9:00am and the last event started after 10:30pm. We started with our first event in the Men 4x200m Semi Final at 9:30am, the Men 4x800m at 11:30am, the Women 4x200m at 6:00pm and the Men Medley at 9:30pm. It was a hot day till about 4:00pm when it started to get cloudy and even a light shower.

As expected we ran all our events in 'style' n all teams finished 'first from bottom', just to 'uphold' the record we set in the previous year ^_^. Nevertheless as usual all our runners ran in high fighting spirit n went all out till the passing of batons n finishing line amidst cheers n applause.
Though we did not win any medals, all of us, participants and supporters enjoyed ourselves and without doubt we will be back again 12 months from now....

Take this opportunity to thank all our participants, supporters, photographers, helpers and last but not least Andrew Loh, Captain Jin n Cupido Kelvin Tharm for making our participation an enjoyable one.

Thank you Athletics Club of USM for holding this meet and PAAA for your technical assistance.

06 Feb - Gong Xi Fa Cai LSD

Pix courtesy of Wong Jin Ji
L->R: Andrew Loh, Ng Seow Kong, Gary Tan

Our 1st usual Sunday LSD in the Year of the Rabbit took off with a Bang at the usual time of 0600H n usual place at Youth Park exit car park this morning, the 4th day of Chinese New Year. Mood of Gong Xi Fa Cai still hanging around us and with the usual tradition of heavy meals of 'Big-Fish-Big-Meat' (in Chinese proverb) we thought it was healthy for us to 'discharge' the excessive carbo-loading in the previous 4 days by having this Gong Xi Fa Cai LSD.

Andrew Loh got a surprise for us, this time again, he brought along a great ultrmarathoner in Mr Ng Seow Kong to join in our run. Apart from having a collection of more than 60 Marathon medals, Mr Ng has a remarkable list of outstanding feats n achievements in the context of endurance n rugged trail challenges under his feet, among them, having completed:

-> The Great Wall Marathon in 2005,
-> Everest Marathon in 2006,
-> North Pole Marathon and Antarctica Ice Marathon in 2007
-> The Marathon Grand Slam (marathons on 7 continents + North Pole) in 2008 including the Comrade Marathon (African continent) n Guayaquil Marathon (South American continent),
-> The 100km del Sahara,
-->The mammoth Amazon Jungle Marathon in October 2009 !!!!!
The Amazon Jungle Marathon 2009 from 11 to 17 Oct consists of 222km of trek in 6 stages which ran along the River Tapajos from the base camp of Itapuama to the finishing at Alter de Chao, a tourist town.
-> the 250km Marathon des Sables in Morocco's Sahara Desert (multistage) in April 2010
->
240km Coast to Kosciuszko (single stage) in Dec 2010

Mr Ng's focus for this year is to qualify for the Badwater 135 miles - single stage in 2012 by completing two more 100 miles single stage races.

(Ref. - Mr Ng Seow , Kong's own article in the March 2010 issue of Pacesetters (PACM) quarterly 'FOOTLOOSE')

Mr Ng, a Chartered Accountant, is a very humble and friendly man, he studied in Jin Sin High School and Chung Ling High School during his school days before further studies abroad and he has been staying n working in Shanghai for the past 18 years with a very very successful career in the Finance/Education sector. He is here in his hometown during the current CNY and thanks to Andrew I had the pleasure of running n chatting with him. He is undoubtedly an idol of inspiration n motivation for us.
Thank you Mr Ng and you have Happy Holidays in Penang.
Looking forward to seeing you 'balik-kampung' 7 years from now
Cheers....

Activity 1/2011 - January 16 - Hiking the Longest Forest Trail in Penang

Our 1st activity of the new year 2011 started off with a different tone, it was not the usual road running like our bread n butter but a hiking expedition along the longest forest trial on Pennag island as planned by Andrew Loh.

This adventurous event attracted more than 40 runners including quite a number of guest runners. It was a beautiful Sunday morning when the hikers assembled at about 6:15am near the Botanical Gardens where a bus took them to the starting point at Taman Rimba at Teluk Bahang.
The route of the trail consists of Taman Rimba at Teluk Bahang -> Station 10 -> Laksamana Hill ->Western Hill -> Tiger Hill -> Penang Hill which took them slightly more than 4 hours to complete.

It must be a fascinating hiking exploration which every hiker enjoyed judging from the following photo albums:

Review of 2010 World's Men Marathon Event

The standard of world's men's marathon is fast improving. In 2010 a total of 124 runners covered the marathon distance of 42.195km in under 2:10 which would have classified them as elites in the 90's. There were 103 runners in 2009, 86 in 2008 and only 70 in 2007 who clocked this sub 2:10 barrier representing a phenomenal growth of 20%, 20%, n 23% over the recent years.

Apparently Kenya and Ethiopia continue to dominate this road event. The world's top 18 runners in 2010 come from Kenya (10) and Ethiopia (8) with the Kenyans occupying the top 4 places, 3 from Rotterdam (1st, 2nd n 4th) n the 3rd from Frankfurt.

On the World's Top 100 list, Kenya dominates with 59 entries followed by Ethiopia in 2nd with 28 and Morocco with 5 in 3rd. with the remaining 8 come from other countries.

The talk of the season was the emotional retirement announcement made by Ethiopian WR holder (2:03:59 in Berlin 2008) following his dropping-off New York City Marathon in November but he quickly reconsidered his quit decision n decided to continue his running career.

The highlight of the season was at the Rotterdam Marathon on 11 April which saw Patrick Makau of Kenya became the 4th all time fastest runner by clocking a world leading time of 2:04:48 to edge fellow countryman Geoffrey Mutai by a mere 7 seconds and this race produce the 1st, 2nd n 4th fastest times of the year.

Another highlight of the year was at the Chicago Marathon on 10 Oct where Sammy Wanjiru of Kenya (2:06:24) had a thrilling tug-of-war victory over Tsegaye Kebede of Ethiopia (2:06:43) and won USD500,000 as the winner of the champion of the 2009-2010 World Marathon Majors series .

Activity 28/2010 - December 19 - Round The Island Relay

Timber
Wood
Earth
Fire
Water
Metal

Time flies, its only 10 days away before we say "HAPPY 2011" and last Sunday we joined the closing climax of the road running event in Penang, viz the 33rd PAAA Round The Island Relay 2010 which was held on Sunday 19 December. The Start/Finish for this year's event was shifted to Upper Penang Road which is about 1km away from that of the previous years resulting in an additional of about 1km to the 1st leg runners at the expense of the 12th or last runners. As usual each team consists of 12 runners + 3 reserves and the total distance is 72.7km in a clockwise direction around the island.

This time we saw a breakthrough in the 33-year history n tradition of this event, for the 1st time ladies were among the participants, although not in the all women category as we suggested last year, the organisers introduced a Mixed category of 6 men n 6 women (ages above 16) per team. Another positive sign was an increased number of participating teams, a total of 27 teams registered for this year comprising of 11 from Men Open, 9 from Men Veteran and 7 Mixed compared to the total of 14 teams, 7 each from Open n Veteran last year. The minimum age for the Veteran category has been raised from 35 to 40 in accordance with IAAF ruling. The qualifying time has also been increased from 6 hours to 7 hours

To foster better understanding n cooperation our i-Run Group merged with Waterfall Warriors Group to participate in this year's event. With the kind n generous sponsorship from our Mr Lin Tai San, MD of TA-I Group, world's No 2 manufacturer of chip resistors, we managed to come up with 6 teams comprising of 4 Mixed n 2 Men Veteran which were named "i-Run Waterfall Warriors" - Water, Metal, Fire, Earth, Wood n Timber respectively.

Fortunately the weather conditions were fine n cloudy on race day. By 5:00am almost all of our runners, helpers, photographers were present at the starting point. It was crowded n noisy with activities of bib number collection, drink n refreshments distribution n photo taking sessions. At about 6:00am runners from all the teams were asked to assemble according to their line-ups. There were 6 buses standby which were provided by the organisers. All the 2nd n 3rd runners were sent to the 1st bus which took them to their respective stations followed by 5 groups of 4th n 5th, 6th n 7th, 8th n 9th, 10th n 11th n 12th to each of the remaining 5 buses for their respective stations. Finally all the 1st runners were flagged off at 6:25am, a delay of 25 minutes.

I drove my car, followed the runners n making stops along the baton exchange stations. While I was waiting at the 2nd station I heard that an unpleasant incident happened in which one of the front 1st leg runners was misled into running into a detour of more than 1km and resulted the following runners followed suit. It was still dark when it happened. Nevertheless the event went on smoothly over the remaining sectors.
