Activity 28/2010 - December 19 - Round The Island Relay

Timber

Metal

Time flies, its only 10 days away before we say "HAPPY 2011" and last Sunday we joined the closing climax of the road running event in Penang, viz the 33rd PAAA Round The Island Relay 2010 which was held on Sunday 19 December. The Start/Finish for this year's event was shifted to Upper Penang Road which is about 1km away from that of the previous years resulting in an additional of about 1km to the 1st leg runners at the expense of the 12th or last runners. As usual each team consists of 12 runners + 3 reserves and the total distance is 72.7km in a clockwise direction around the island.

This time we saw a breakthrough in the 33-year history n tradition of this event, for the 1st time ladies were among the participants, although not in the all women category as we suggested last year, the organisers introduced a Mixed category of 6 men n 6 women (ages above 16) per team. Another positive sign was an increased number of participating teams, a total of 27 teams registered for this year comprising of 11 from Men Open, 9 from Men Veteran and 7 Mixed compared to the total of 14 teams, 7 each from Open n Veteran last year. The minimum age for the Veteran category has been raised from 35 to 40 in accordance with IAAF ruling. The qualifying time has also been increased from 6 hours to 7 hours

To foster better understanding n cooperation our i-Run Group merged with Waterfall Warriors Group to participate in this year's event. With the kind n generous sponsorship from our Mr Lin Tai San, MD of TA-I Group, world's No 2 manufacturer of chip resistors, we managed to come up with 6 teams comprising of 4 Mixed n 2 Men Veteran which were named "i-Run Waterfall Warriors" - Water, Metal, Fire, Earth, Wood n Timber respectively.

Fortunately the weather conditions were fine n cloudy on race day. By 5:00am almost all of our runners, helpers, photographers were present at the starting point. It was crowded n noisy with activities of bib number collection, drink n refreshments distribution n photo taking sessions. At about 6:00am runners from all the teams were asked to assemble according to their line-ups. There were 6 buses standby which were provided by the organisers. All the 2nd n 3rd runners were sent to the 1st bus which took them to their respective stations followed by 5 groups of 4th n 5th, 6th n 7th, 8th n 9th, 10th n 11th n 12th to each of the remaining 5 buses for their respective stations. Finally all the 1st runners were flagged off at 6:25am, a delay of 25 minutes.

I drove my car, followed the runners n making stops along the baton exchange stations. While I was waiting at the 2nd station I heard that an unpleasant incident happened in which one of the front 1st leg runners was misled into running into a detour of more than 1km and resulted the following runners followed suit. It was still dark when it happened. Nevertheless the event went on smoothly over the remaining sectors.

Activity 26/2010 - December 12 - SPRITZER - KRI 12KM ANNUAL RUN, IPOH

Below is a write-up by James Lee regarding the above event:

Excerpt:

What: SPRITZER - KRI 12KM ANNUAL RUN

Organized by KELAB ROADRUNNERS IPOH 怡保竞跑俱乐部

When : Sunday 12 December 7:30am at Bukit Kinding, Tanjung Rambutan, Ipoh, Perak.

Distance : 12km
Route: Bukit Kinding hilly golf course.
Categories:

BOYS UNDER 18 (A) , MEN OPEN 18-39 (B), MEN VETERAN 40-49 ( C ), MEN SENIOR VETERAN 50-59

(D), MEN DIAMOND ABOVE 60 (E), WOMEN OPEN 18-39 (F), WOMEN VETERAN 40-49 (G), WOMEN OVER 50 (H)

Understand this is the 6th annual road race event organised by KRI (Kelab Roadrunners Ipoh). There were less than 800 participants for this event.

Only a few of us attended the Ipoh Bukit Kinding 12km run on 12/12/2010 (Sunday) as there were other events such as Penang Pesta Dragon boat race, Penang Star walk, KL Asian challenge & 6th Thailand Ocean to Ocean (Sunrise to Sunset) Relay at Songkla. i-Run set foot on all events to ensure we win part of the trophies. (Just kidding.)

Sherlin, Bee Hong, Hoay Jen, Beng Bin, Khoo GO & myself arrived in Ipoh @ 4pm. Along the way from Penang to Ipoh, there was heavy rain fall. Hoay Jen who earlier arrived has collected bibs & goodies bags for all.

At 6am uncle Gan (Jen’s dad) lead us from Ipoh Garden Red Crescent via Bercham to Bkt Kinding. That was about a 20 min drive. Reported @ 6.30am & race flagged off at 7.30am.

This was the first time for all of us in attending this event & we never expected it was such hilly after all we have experienced the toughest hilly road of Puchong Newton race this year. There are slopes after slopes & in greater vertical degree. I would say less than 5% of runners were able run through those slopes but walked through them. Fortunately there were water stations at 6km & 8km. After 8km most of the roads are downhill. Yes, there is no flat road!!!

Comparatively, Penang Ayer Itam dam up & down hill is 4km, This Bkt Kinding is 12km with even greater vertical degree. However the scenery & fresh air are 5 star.

Penang ladies –

Ewe Bee Hong (Champion) G011 - 1:10:09 (Category G

Gan Hoay Jen (7th position) F010 - 1:13:57 (Category F)

Sherlin (14th position) G012 - 1:23:26 (Category G)

Feuchtinger Eva (15th position) G013 - 1:23:27 (Category G)

Myself (position unknown) C077 - 1:10:29 (Category C)

According to the organizer this year route has some changes however it was equally successful & was very well organized especially with many foods & drinks supply during & at the Finish. Other than the running T-shirt, there were finisher’s T but only 600 finisher’s medal.

If you have not set foot on this event & you like challenges, I would recommend this to you.

Lastly, thank you Mr. & Mrs. Gan for being with us all the time. Nice food stalls for dinner, lunch & accommodation. Not forgetting the heart-warming milo in the morning. You make this journey easier for you & we appreciate your accompany.

The State Funeral of late Tun Dr Lim Chong Eu was held yesterday and we had a joint LSD with the Waterfall Warriors Group starting from our usual starting point at Youth Park car park at 6:00am and proceeded to Dewan Sri Pinang where we paid our last respect to late Tun.
Mr Tey Eng Tiong, a well known runner cum photographer from Kuala Lumpur was kind enough to join us and we had the pleasure of having him as our cameraman and sharing his vast running knowledge from his long running experience.
On behalf of all the runners who took part I would like to express our sincere thanks and appreciations to Mr Tey for his great dedication and spirit in the promotion of running.

Activity 22/2010 - November 14 - 10km Veterans Run 2010

photos courtesy of Mei Ling

What: 10km Veterans Run 2010
Organised by Penang Veteran Athletes Association (PVAA)
When : Sunday 14 November 8:00am at PISA
Distance : 10.25km
Route: PISA -> J. Tun Dr Awang -> J. Sultan Azlan Shah -> J. Tun Dr Awang -> PISA
Age Group Categories:
16-34yrs, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 and above

This is the inaugural road race event organised by PVAA under the new president of Mr Jordan Lee with the technical assistance from the PAAA.

Not many runners were attracted by this event probably due to the proximity of the more significant PBIM on the following Sunday. The race was flagged off at 8:00am which to the views of most participants was rather late as most events start earlier to avoid the heat and volume of traffic. However it was not too unbearable thanks to some drizzle minutes before the race and excellent traffic controls at road junctions.

This event saw a breakthrough in having different categories of age groups with every increment of 5 years from 35 to 70 and 70 years and above, similar to most road races held in Thailand and the 1st in Penang and probably in Malaysia. The top 3 finishers in each category were awarded with a trophy each and this presentation certainly encourages more veteran runners to participate. Hope organisers of future events will follow suit. A limited number of finishing medals were also given to finishers.

As a whole this event was very well organised especially with sufficient supply of drinks at the Finish. Thank you the PVAA and PAAA.

Quite a number of our group entered this run and we all enjoyed this 'warming-up' run in preparation for the upcoming PBIM. As usual it was 'rocking n party' time at the finish after the race to celebrate Christine Lim's birthday.

Thanks to everybody for giving his/her helping hands in registration, taking photos, bringing nice food and drinks and making our gathering so enjoyable.

Congratulations to our Trophy Winners:
Captain Tan Cheng Jin - 44:45 - 2nd position in Category M2
Women
Gan Hoay Jen - 59:26 - 2nd in Category F1
Ch'ng Lay Khim ------- 1st in Category F2
Chung Mei Ling ------- 1st in Category F3
Lee Heng Keat -------- 3rd in Category F9

Activity 21/2010 - November 7 - Larian Muhibbah NTCRC 2010

Photos courtesy of Mei Ling

What: Larian Muhibbah NTCRC 2010
When : Sunday 7 November at 7:30am
Where : Nibong Tebal, Seberang Perai
Distance : 6km for Women n 8km for Men

Nearly 30 runners from our group attended and they went in 8 cars

Please view below an extract of a report from Facebook written by James Lee :

"Again Penang rockers did it with excessive loud noices, gags & eye-catching behaviors. 2 New rockers: Phew-may & Niphenyu. Runners all out for the limited finisher's medals & most of us got it (If not all) Hoooooray. Some got lucky draw.
Thereafter we adjourned to the Serdang famous delight which recommended by Kelvin. At first we curse for the long drive thru long-narrow-winding road. Surprisingly the restaurant serve cheap & good dishes. There were fried porridge, sambal fried potato leave, Thai's steamed fish, curried wild boar & the last is my personal favor - ancestor recipe of wild boar leg. deliciousss & good for cartilage health. A+ for Kelvin recommendation.
We shall now plan for the next outstation event in Ipoh & awaiting for the fun photos upload by ML."

Activity 20/2010 - Oct 24 - Kebun Bunga Charity Run 2010

This is the 2nd year that this charity run was held in aid of Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital "Needy Cancer Patients Funds" & Pure Lotus Hospice Compassion. The event was initiated by Adun of Kebun Bunga, YB Jason Ong, organised by Persatuan Kebajikan Masyarakat Muafakat Pulau Pinang with the technical assistance of PAAA and sponsored by many organisations.

The run was flagged off at 7:30am at the Youth Park towards the direction of the Botanic Gardens where runners rounded the lower loop and headed straight till J. Utama/J.Macalister junction, turned right along J. Brooke to Jesselton Height and finished at the Youth Park padang for a distance of 6.56km.

More than 30 of our group registered and apart from this charity run event we had our regular Sunday LSD which we placed more priority in view of the upcoming PBIM in 4 weeks' time. As such we started our scheduled 14km or 21km LSD at 5:30am so that we could continued with the charity run at 7:30am later after all this was not a competitive run.

Interesting to see all our runners were sweating before the flag-off and most of us were treating this as a fun run or a 'cooling-down' run. However the climax of the morning came after the run near the stage where we had an exceptionally big food party. It was a grand potluck with lots and lots of delicious food, among them pizza, coffee cakes and barley soup from Mei Ling, Dom fried rice from Cupido Kelvin, giant-paos from Nanny Cheng, tomatoes from James and many more. Many thanks to all of you including those if I had missed.

Many nice photos were taken and we thank all the photographers for their kind effort.
Thank you all the participants for the enjoyable Sunday morning
Thanks to the organisers and PAAA officials.

Activity 19/2010 - October 17 - City Run

Distance : 8.08km
Route: Prangin Mall/Komtar -> J.Dr Lim Chwee Leong -> L. Carnarvon -> L. Acheh -> L.Armenian -> L. Canon -> L. Pantai -> L. Light -> L. Farquhar -> J Sultan Ahmad Shah -> J. Larut -> J. Burma -> J Pangkor -> J. Macallister -> J. Penang -> J. Dr Lim Chwee Leong > Komtar

This is an annual event organised by Kwong Wah Yit Poh daily, which is celebrating its 100th anniversary. The distance of this event had been increased slightly as from last year by including certain roads covering certain heritage sites in the city. Nevertheless ambiguity remains as to the official distance of 10km published by the organsers all these years. After the addition of the new route in these heritage sites last year, the actual distance was increased from about 7 km to about 8.5km. Yesterday's route was only 8.08km according to my GPS watch even with the omission of about 0.5km to the Esplanade.

It is misleading when one looks at the winners' time of 30"s for a distance of 10km. Wonder how long are the organisers going to hang on to this obvious shortfall error of about 20% in distance. Heard the distance of this event of more than 10 years ago was actually longer which included part of Weld Quay.

The race started well with the flag-off by our Chief Minister at 7:15am. Weather conditions were favourable especially after a rain on the previous night like what happened a fortnight ago during the Tanjong 10km Run. Rain seems to a worrying factor for the exceptional many event organisers and participants these days.

There were more than a thousand participants at the start and what surprised me was that merely after 750 meters after the start suddenly I saw the 1st 'wrist band collecting point which is right at the tight corner of a narrow U-turn of Carnarvon St. causing a massive congestion for runners rushing for the bands. Understand it does not serve the purpose to give wrist bands before the Start to the not quarantined runners but to do after a short distance when the runners are still massive is not the alternative.

Anyway the event, with the technical assistance from the PAAA was well organised.

Below are the results of our top trophy winners:
Women Junior:
1st - Chen Ee Ven --- 41:06
Women Senior:
5th - Gan Hoay Jen - 44:31
7th - Lee Heng Kiat - 44:55
Men Junior
5th - Liew Chien Sioen - 33:40
6th - Tan Ah Ching (Ah Soon) - 33:51
7th - Tan Cheng Jin ---- 33:57

(these results were taken from the print-out after the race at the Finish from the organisers but there is a slight variation in the results published in today's KWYP)

Congratulations the the winners and thank you to all the runners who participated in this race.
Thank you all the helpers who went up to Gelugor to collect the bibs.
Thank you again MLing and thank you Ah Soon for the delicious food you prepared and brought along. Thank you MLing and SK for the photographs.

Activity 18/2010 - October 3 - Tanjung 10km 2010

This is one of Penang's popular medium range annual road races which was inaugurated more than 20 years ago held in conjunction with the birthday of TYT Yang Di Pertiua Negeri Pulau Pinang and this year it is no exception.
The route of this event consists of the starting point at Jalan Sepoy Lines which runs along Polo Ground, Jalan Residency, Jalan Macalister, Jalan Anson, Jalan Pangkor, Jalan Kelawei, Jalan Bagan Jermal, Jalan Gottieb, Jalan Utama, Jalan Macalister, Jalan Residency and back to Jalan Sepoy Lines covering a distance of 10.2km.

This morning I woke up before 6 beating my alarm clock and rather uneasy but not surprised to note that it was drizzling when we were hoping the rain last night would not repeat this morning. Nevertheless I thought not to be so worried as it could be worse if it were a downpour like we experienced during our Merdeka Run 2 months ago and off I headed to Polo Ground.
It was still drizzling lightly along the way and thank god it stopped when I arrived at the Start and I told myself it would be a perfect environment to run.

According to the press a total of 1231 runners took part. The race was gunned-off sharply at 7:30. Like previous years the prize giving ceremony and luck draw which consist of a grand prize of a motorcycle were held at The Residency across the padang.

As usual we had our happy hours of fun and makan after the finish. Thanks to Mei Ling the main item on her menu this time was the yummy yummy muffin and thanks to all who were kind enough to bring along other food items. Thanks to all the photographers especially William, SK and Sunny and to all the helpers especially Andrew, Gan and many others.
